In the Fort Smith, Arkansas news paper:
A Fort Smith soldier was among the Americans freed by North Koreans inthe prisoner exchanged Tuesday night, and he may be coming home to sadnews. His family isn't sure he has received word of his mother'sdeath.
Hardwick (Marion) first learned of his son's release when phoned by areporter. The news was "surprising" but "very fine" he said. Thesoldiers's mother died two years ago, Hardwick said. A sister, Mrs.Gene Blanchet (Blanscet), Delaware, Oklahoma, wrote the the GI thenews of his mother's death, but the family isn't sure he received theletter. Hardwick said he last heard from his son approximatley threemonths ago. The soldier wrote he was "getting along pretty good," atthat time.
The family received only four letters while Hardwick was a prisoner,the father said, and they were spaced about a year apart. Hardwickhas been in the Army five years.

Lloyd Everet Hardwick, 60, of Stilwell, Okla., died Friday, July 13,1990, at his home.
A veteran of the Korean conflict, he was a Korean prisoner of war for37 months.
He was a member of the Ex POWS and the American Legion and was of theBaptist faith. The son of Marion W. and Eva Mae Anderson Hardwick, hewas born July 27, 1929, in Barling. He was married to Aline HastingsGriffin on May 5, 1976, in Westville, Okla.
Survivors in clude his wife, Aline; two daughters, Lawanna HardwickCooper of Muldrow and Diana Griffin of Stilwell; six sons, HaroldHardwick of Muldrow, Eddie, Jim, Kevin and Dennis Griffin, all ofStilwell, and Donald Griffin of Clarksville, Tenn.; one sister, MarieBlanscet of Ozark; one brother, Elbert Hardwick of Sallisaw, Okla.;and 16 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and by one brother, EarnestHardwick.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday at Hart Memorial Chapel,with Rev. Larry Swafford officiationg. Burial was in the BaptistMission Cemetery in Westville.
