It was told that Andrew and his family were eating breakfast when adetachment of soldiers rode in. They swore in Andrew into theConfederate Army right there at the breakfast table. They took himand his horse, a young filly that wasn't fully broken. They rode outtoward Fayetteville, leaving Marianne with eight children. Tom wasleft to be the head of the family.
At Fayetteville, called Mount Comfort, a new regiment was musteredtogether to form the 34th Arkansas Inf. C.S.A. Fagans Brigade,Churchill Division, Trans-Mississippi Dept. with Col. William H.Brooks in charge. (It was reorganized later as Calvery)
Andrew was placed in Company B under Captain F.R. Earle. Each manbrough with him, his own gun, mostley double barreled shotguns thatwere used for hunting. Andrew rode his half broken, shy prone filly,as he had left his older, trained horse with his family for use as aplow horse.
Family story says Andrew was wouonded at the Battle of Pea Ridge, butit was fought March 6, 1862, over a year prior to Andrew's enteringthe Confederate Army. Also he was supposed to have been wounded nearRogers, Arkansas. Andrew and his horse was running through the woodswhen he was brushed off against a tree, knocking him off and stunninghim. A Union soldier named Watkins, came along and shot him in thetemple. Part of the bullet worked out of the opposite ear. Andrew wasgoing to shoot him but was so weak that he crawled off and hid himself. Someone came along and took him to Ozark, Arkansas whereMarianne and the children were. They hid Andrew in a cave, Marrianneand the older children took turn caring for him.
When Andrew was well enough to travel they packed up and moved toTexas Territory across Red River and stayed until the Civil War wasover.
Bette was born during the time they were living near Clarksville,Texas, on 10 Mar 1865.
When the war was over, they headed north again, into Arkansas. Beforethey got to Chismville, Arkansas, an ox died, so they hooked theirmilk cow up to the harness. They went to Pond Creek Mountain, north ofAltus, Arkansas to make their home.
