LAND:
* Purchased land in Franklin County, Arkansas 8 Feb. 1899.(EDGIN0007).
According to family tradition, the family moved to this farm whenAddie was
two weeks old (January 1896). It is probable that Feb. 1899 is whenthe farm
was actually paid for and the deed turned over. He paid one bale ofcotton
for the farm formerly owned by the Nave family. Most of this land isnow
owned by Harley Edgin except for 9 acres owned by Kemper Edgin.
* EDG0191. William R. Nave paid $14.00 to homestead the original 80acres 20
May 1875 for SW 1/4 NE 1/4 and SW 1/4 of Section 17 in township 10N ofrange
26W. Application No. 9254 at Dardanelle, Arkansas. He received hisfinal
homestead certificate No. 2590 on July 6, 1880. William R. Felker andB. D.
McWhorter submitted testimony in support of his claim. William R.Nave states
that he occupied the land since January 1874. William R. Nave built ahouse
in 1874 and built the house he is now living in 1876. He stated thatin
addition to his dwelling house, he has built a smoke house, a corncrib, a
stable and planted an orchard as well as cleared 25 acres. He statesthat the
total value of land and improvements was about $350.00. He hasplanted 25
acres in wheat, corn, cotton and oats. This document was filed 26June 1880.
William R. Nave received final Certificate No. 2590 on HomesteadApplication
No. 9204 from the Dardnelle land office 30 December 1882.
* Samuel Edgin bought the land from William R. Nave's estate. Theestate was
administered by one of the Conatsers (a cousin of Samuel Edgin). TheNave
family (I believe William, his wife and one child) are buried justoutside the
Gar Creek Cemetery on land now owned by Harley Edgin.
* His land was surveyed in Feb. Mar. or Apr. 1903. Noted that theycould not
find old trees but found where they stood. Corners were markedEDG0155
· According to telephone conversation with Ada Edgin Kearns 21 Jan1995,
Samuel Edgin, assisted by Jim Sells, built the kitchen on the back ofthe
house about 1906. Samuel Edgin, assisted by Will Fowler, built thetwo rooms
on the East end of the house about 1910.
!TAX LIST OF FRANKLIN COUNTY, ARKANSAS:
* 1886 tax list as S. A. Edgin School District No. 30 film 1027885(EDG0153)
* 1894 tax list Franklin County, Arkansas. Paid one poll tax and onehorse or
mule (EDGIN0029).
!BIRTH AND MARRIAGE:
* Date of birth and marriage from the Edgin family Bible owned byHarley Edgin.
Have not been able to locate a record of his marriage in theFranklin County
records.
* Date of birth and death are confirmed from his tombstone in GarCreek
Cemetery in Franklin Co., Arkansas. (EDG0153)
!CHURCH:
* Records of Gar Creek United Methodist Church, Ozark, FranklinCounty,
Arkansas and tombstone in Gar Creek Cemetery.
* He joined Gar Creek Methodist Church August 3, 1911 along with hiswife
Phoebe, sister in law, Mary Dobbs, and daughter Ada Edgin. Hisdaughters,
Nancy and Addie joined on July 3, 1911.
* According to Ada Edgin Kearns and Raymond Edgin, he wassuperintendent of
the Sunday School at Gar Creek Methodist for several years.
!CENSUS:
* Listed in the 1870 census of Franklin County Arkansas, family No.241,
dwelling 226, as Samuel Agent, age 9, born Arkansas.
* He is listed in the 1880 census of Franklin County, Arkansas as Sam,age 19,
born Ark.
* He is listed in the 1900 census of Franklin County, Arkansas asSamuel A,
age 38, born Arkansas.
* He is listed in the 1910 census of Franklin County, Arkansas asSamuel A.,
age 48, born Arkansas.
!GENERAL:
* He lived all his life in Franklin County, Arkansas.
* He injured his right leg in a wagon accident as a small child whichtroubled
him for the remainder of his life. On occasion, a piece of bone wouldwork
out of his flesh near the knee. At one time, he could not work for 18months
as a result of this injury. He later suffered from what the doctorscalled
"White
Swelling" or "Tuberculosis of the Bone" which seems to have resultedin his
death.
* He was remembered by his children as a very mild man who would notpunish
his children. Ada remembers that he hit her and Addie with a cornstalk once
for some misbehavior and spent several days trying to apologize forit. He
did spank Nathan and Nancy one time when they lived at the foot of theAltus
hill for taking a green watermelon from one of the neighbors fieldsbut was so
upset about it that he declared he would never spank them again.
!LIVING
* According to Raymond Edgin, Samuel frequently told him Samuel wasborn on
the North side of the Old Wire Road on land now owned by the Halmesfamily
near a small abandoned cemetery.
* He lived at Mulberry in Franklin Co., Arkansas shortly after hismarriage.
His first child, Nathan was born at Mulberry according to Nathan’sobituary.
This fits what I was told by Addie Edgin Sanders, Ada Edgin Kearns andRaymond
Edgin.
* According to Ada Edgin Kearns, he moved to Mulberry, also inFranklin
County, Arkansas shortly after his marriage and lived there when hisson
Nathan was Born. The family then lived just at the foot of the Altushill on
a small road which cuts off there for a period of time. Both Nancyand Nathan
were small at the time. I am not certain where Nancy was born. Thefamily
moved to a community called Valley View just North of the Red Hill andwest of
Highway 219 near what is now called the Pleasant Grove Community whereAddie
was born. Both Nathan and Nancy went to school at Valley View for atleast
some period of time. The family moved to the Edgin home place in theGar
Creek Community when Addie was 2 weeks old and Ada and Raymond wereboth born
there. They must have moved to the Gar Creek Community about 20 Jan1896.
* According to telephone conversation with Ada Edgin Kearns, 9 June,1996, he
worked during winters and on Saturdays at a store in Ozark, Arkansasowned by
William Columbus "Bill" Conatser and his brother Marion B. "Doc"Conatser.
This building is still standing on the North East Corner of theCourthouse
Square in Ozark, Arkansas.
* In the early 1800's, he was a member of the Farmers Union alongwith
several local farmers, including Tom Plemons and Ed Shuller accordingto Ada
Edgin Kearns. The Farmers Union lasted only a few years in the area.
