George Cecil Harper, 81, a native and practically a pioneer of theLoma CO area, died of naturalcauses Monday, May 24, 1993, in St.Mary's Hospital and Medical Center in Grand Junction, Co.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, May 28, 1993, atGrace Community Church, Fruita, CO., with Rev. Ron McMullanofficiating. Burial will follow in New Elmwood Cemetery at Fruita.
He was born Sept. 25, 1911, at Loma to George W. and Henrietta(Rhoades) Harper. His parents moved to Loma in 1910 where his fatherworked as a surveyor for the Highlind Canal. His parents rented farmhomes, moving frequently according to the location of the canal work. When George was three, his uncle rented the Horsethief Canyon Ranchand the Harpers lived there two years. George remembered the grandeurof the place, built by millionaire prospector who went broke. It hadsteam heat, hardwood floors, a garden, orchard and vineyard, a waterwheel and the stone quarry where material was cut for the Loma School. He often recalled the fear and fascination of taking the High Trailclutching his mother's hand and seeing the outlaws' abandoned cabinand the escape trail. His mother died of cancer when he was 14. Theyoungest child was two and their father kept the family together.
The children went to Loma, Valley View and Sunset Schools in a coveredwagon on dirt roads. George attended Fruita Union High School untilit burned. A couple of years later, he lived with an uncle in GardenCity, Kansas and worked in a hardware store. There he met and marriedAnna. N. Blanscet on July 1, 1930. She survives.
With work scarce in Kansas in 1931, they moved to Colorado tohomestead in Garfield County. They moved to a farm on Q road, near 13Road. They bought the place across the rad where they have lived eversince. Starting with 150 acres, they expanded farming beans, alfalfaor sugar beets according to the market. Their two sons fram the landnow.
In the 1960's they ranHarper and Sons Dairy, selling it in 1968.
The Loma George Harper knew was a far cry from today. He talked ofapple orchards, canning factories, lumber yard, five blacksmiths, ahotel, pool hall, three churches and a post office. By 1915 the townhad running water.
In the 1940's and 50's the Harpers went on foot or horseback to danceson Saturdays in the lofs of barns and packing sheds with live music.
When he was a boy, George said, Loma held fish-fries at the park onthe river. "Everyone caught so many fish they probably caused theendangered species," he would joke.
Doctor James Orr delivered the Harper's daughter in their home.
Mr. Harper spent most of his life participationg in the development ofLoma. He had been active as a committeeman for the republican Party, served on the Loma School Dist. 23 Board and Highland Water UsersBoard, was a member of the Fruita IOOF Lodge, Fruita Hesperia Lodge#120 AF & AM, and the Fraternal Order of Eagles. He also served onthe board of the Grand Valley Water Users Assn. for 27 years andserved one year as town marshal for Fruita and three years asconstable and process server by appointment of Mesa countyCommissioner.
He loved to graden, travel and fish.
